Nepal Beema Pradhikaran — officially the Nepal Insurance Authority (NIA) — is the government body that licenses, regulates, and supervises every insurance company operating in Nepal. If you buy life insurance in Nepal, every aspect of that transaction — from the product being sold to the claim being paid — is governed by this organisation.
What is Nepal Beema Pradhikaran?
Nepal Beema Pradhikaran was formerly known as Beema Samiti. It was renamed and reconstituted as a more powerful regulatory body following the enactment of the Insurance Act 2079 BS (2022 AD) under the Ministry of Finance.
NIA is the exclusive regulator of Nepal’s entire insurance industry — both life insurance and non-life insurance.

What Does NIA Actually Do?
- Licensing insurance companies — No company can sell insurance in Nepal without an NIA license. All 14 current life insurance companies hold valid NIA licenses.
- Approving insurance products — Every plan offered by any company must be NIA-approved before it can be sold to the public.
- Setting minimum capital requirements — NIA raised the minimum paid-up capital for life insurers from NPR 2 Arba to NPR 5 Arba. This triggered the recent wave of mergers reducing Nepal’s life insurers from 18+ to the current 14.
- Implementing Risk-Based Capital (RBC) — Introduced in fiscal year 2080/81, RBC requires companies to hold capital proportional to the risks they actually underwrite — protecting policyholders from insolvencies.
- Monitoring solvency — NIA requires all 14 life insurers to submit regular financial reports. If a company shows signs of financial distress, NIA can intervene.
- Regulating insurance agents — Each agent may only represent one insurance company — the “one agent, one company” rule. Every agent you speak with legally represents their specific company’s interests, not yours.
- Handling consumer complaints — NIA operates a consumer grievance mechanism. If you have a dispute with an insurance company, you can file a formal complaint with NIA.
- Publishing annual reports — NIA publishes annual data on claim settlement ratios, premium income, policy counts. Free at nia.gov.np.
How to Verify an Insurance Company With NIA
Before buying any life insurance policy in Nepal, verify the company is licensed by NIA:
- Visit nia.gov.np
- Look for the “Licensed Companies” or “Registered Companies” section
- Confirm the company name appears on the current list of licensed life insurers
All 14 companies covered on nepallifeinsurance.com are NIA-licensed. Never buy insurance from an unlicensed company.
How to File a Complaint With NIA
If an insurance company treats you unfairly — rejected claim, policy not issued as agreed, premium refund issues — you can file a formal complaint with NIA:
- First attempt to resolve directly with the insurance company’s grievance committee
- If unresolved, visit NIA’s head office in Kathmandu or submit via nia.gov.np
- Bring: your policy document, correspondence with the insurer, and a written complaint
- NIA will investigate and can direct the company to comply
