Best Life Insurance Companies in Nepal All 14 Insurers Ranked

One question matters more than any other when you buy life insurance: will this company actually pay when my family needs it?

That question has one answer: the claim settlement ratio — the percentage of death claims an insurer paid, verified by Nepal Beema Pradhikaran (NIA).

This guide ranks all 14 NIA-licensed Nepal life insurers using the most accurate method available: NIA Annual Report FY 2081/82, Schedule 14 & 15, amount-based formula.

Formula: Claims Paid ÷ (Claims Paid + Outstanding) × 100

This is not marketing data. It is the number Nepal’s own regulator publishes every year.

Why Claim Settlement Ratio Is the Only Number That Matters

Your family will never care about your policy’s bonus rate, its premium receipt, or its marketing brochure. They will care about one thing: will the company pay?

A claim settlement ratio of 98% means: out of every 100 death claims filed, 98 were paid. The other 2 families received nothing — after years of premium payments.

A low premium means nothing if the claim gets rejected. Always verify the CSR before you verify the price.

Important Context: Nepal Life’s #9 Ranking

Nepal Life Insurance ranks #9 at 90.54% — but this number deserves context. Nepal Life paid NPR 16.84 billion in claims in FY 2081/82 — the highest absolute payout of any insurer in Nepal. Its lower ratio reflects a larger outstanding pipeline at year-end, driven purely by claim volume. Nepal Life is not rejecting claims; it is processing more claims than anyone else in Nepal.

The Top 5 — In Detail

1. Asian Life Insurance — #1, 98.85% ▲

Asian Life Insurance tops Nepal’s 14 life insurers with a 98.85% claim settlement ratio in FY 2081/82 — the highest in the market and an improvement from 98.49% the previous year. For every 100 death claims filed, approximately 99 were paid. This is a remarkable result and reflects tight, reliable claims management.

The Three Mergers You Should Know

Nepal went from 18+ life insurers to 14 after NIA mandated consolidation. Four of the current 14 are merged entities:

  • SuryaJyoti Life — formed from Surya Life + Jyoti Life Insurance
  • Himalayan Life — formed from Union Life + Prime Life + Gurans Life
  • Sanima Reliance Life — formed from Sanima Life + Reliance Life
  • Prabhu Mahalaxmi Life — formed from Prabhu Life + Mahalaxmi Life

All four merged entities are operating normally under NIA regulatory oversight.

How to Use This Data to Choose Your Insurer

Three questions. Three minutes. One decision.

1. What matters most to you — claim reliability or lowest premium?
Highest claim ratio: Asian Life (98.85%). Lowest endowment premium: Rastriya Jeevan Beema (NPR 122,100). The gap in premium between many top-ranked insurers is less than NPR 1,500/year — barely the cost of one cup of coffee a month.

2. Do you want a Nepali company, or international brand backing?
Fully Nepali: Asian Life, Sun Nepal Life, Reliable Nepal Life, Citizen Life, and 9 others. Foreign branch: LIC Nepal (Indian) and MetLife Nepal (American).

3. What type of policy do you need — savings + protection, or pure protection?
Savings + protection (endowment): choose any of the top 5. Pure protection only (term): compare term premiums on our Premium Calculator.
